The government increased the cost of fuel and diesel by about Rs20 per litre each at the beginning of August 2023, bringing local prices to about Rs273 per litre. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan terms made this decision necessary, leaving the government with no choice but to pass along the cost of rising global commodity prices to local consumers rather than providing subsidies to relieve pressure on businesses and households during trying times.
The government's finance department declared in a statement that the price of High Speed Diesel (HSD) would rise by Rs20 to Rs293.40 per litre and that of petrol would rise by Rs17.50 to Rs290.45 per litre.
The government's move, according to the appeal, created a false shortage of petrol in Lahore, which led to complaints against distributors, retailers, and petrol station owners. The appeal was published by attorney Azhar Siddique.
Previously, diesel cost Rs273.40 per litre and petrol cost Rs272.95 per litre.
Diesel is commonly used in the transportation and agricultural industries while petrol is used in automobiles and motorcycles.
The government is currently taxing consumers for fuel at the highest rate ever.
According to the appeal, which was put out by attorney Azhar Siddique, the government's action caused an artificial shortage of petrol in Lahore, which sparked outcry against distributors, merchants, and owners of gas stations.
